  16. Introduction to tfmEditor
  17.  
  18. tfmEditor was originally conceived as a small, 
  19. handy text editor that would be able to output 
  20. documents in plain or rich text with basic page 
  21. formatting capability, or else send documents 
  22. directly to email via the internet.  No sooner 
  23. had I sent my first email message from tfmEditor 
  24. than I realized how I wished I could also download 
  25. my mail from the server, since I was already online.  
  26. So I began working on adding email retreival via 
  27. the internet.  Then I began wanting to be able to 
  28. save email and reply and forward...
  29.  
  30. I'm not sure if I've created a simple text editor or 
  31. a fledgling  email client, but whatever it is, I've 
  32. begun to like it.  I intend to continue developing 
  33. it until...well,until it's perfect, I guess.  This is truly 
  34. an unfinished product.  There are features that I 
  35. haven't begun to implement.  There are kludgy things.
  36. There are bugs.  (None disastrous, that I know of).

  38. What's new in Beta 4
  39.  
  40. Bugs fixed:  Find and Replace now work as 
  41. expected.  File drop from Explorer now works properly.
  42. Double clicking on the Date or Time now inserts 
  43. them at cursor instead of at end of document.

  45. Added Features: Additions to the toolbar make it 
  46. easier to set font attributes.  There are new speed 
  47. buttons to make it easier to reach settings, send 
  48. email, retrieve email and page setup. The Edit 
  49. menu now has an Undo.  The Options menu now 
  50. has an option to use Page Setup Width.  This 
  51. setting should give an approximate view of what 
  52. your page will look like when printed if you have 
  53. run the page setup dialog.  The Settings dialog now 
  54. offers an option to save a copy to yourself of outgoing 
  55. email, and also provides choice of directory to save 
  56. copies-to-self.

  58. Features
  59.  
  60. Currently tfmEditor will do most of the basic things 
  61. a text editor should do.  Many menu items are 
  62. self-explanatory.  It will save either rich or plain text 
  63. files depending on the Text Attributes/Plain Text Only 
  64. setting.  It will find and replace text. Page layout is 
  65. supported, though hard page breaks are not.  Several 
  66. font attributes are supported. Word wrap can be toggled 
  67. on and off.  The form can be toggled to stay on top 
  68. of other forms.  The installation program that puts 
  69. tfmEditor on you computer will allow you to completely 
  70. uninstall it should you wish to.

  72. tfmEditor is email enabled.  Email information must
  73.  be entered in Options/Settings before the email  
  74. operations will work (and you need to have a an 
  75. Internet connection open).  tfmEditor will also save 
  76. downloaded email messages in the email directory 
  77. set in Options/Settings.  These can be viewed at any 
  78. later date.  Email attachements can be executed by 
  79. any associated program.

  81. Features I will implement in the future include a help 
  82. file (done in beta 5), paragraph formatting, date formats 
  83. (double clicking on the date or time at the top of the 
  84. editor will insert them into the document)(done in beta 
  85. 5) personal signatures for email, other insertions such
  86. as file path and name, etc., spell checking, email and 
  87. other address book...

  89. Features I may implement some day include macro 
  90. scripting, print preview, and things I haven't even thought 
  91. of yet.  I will seriously  consider any suggestions for
  92. improvement emailed to me.

  94. Installation
  95.  
  96. You will probably have downloaded this file in .zip 
  97. format.  To install tfmEditor, unzip the file with Winzip 
  98. or another such application to a temporary directory.  
  99. Run setup.exe and follow the onscreen instructions.  
  100. If you should decide to uninstall tfmEditor open Control 
  101. Panel and double click on the Add/Remove Software 
  102. icon.  tfmEditor will be on the list of software that can 
  103. be uninstalled.  The precedure will completely take 
  104. tfmEditor off your hard drive, including Registry entries.

  106. Registration

  108. This is a free beta version of tfmEditor.  There is no 
  109. expiration date, nor is registration required.  However, 
  110. if you register with an email and let me know where 
  111. you found tfmEditor, I will notifiy you by email each 
  112. time new upgrades are availble to be  downloaded 
  113. from my website.

  117. Though this program was written with all due 
  118. care and I have used it on my personal computer, 
  119. as well as deploying it on many others, all without 
  120. any harmful side effects, I cannot guarantee that 
  121. it will function as intended in every environment, 
  122. nor can I be responsible for the results of its misuse.

  124. Requirements
  125.  
  126. tfmEditor is a 32-bit Windows application.  It will run 
  127. only in Microsoft Windows 95 or NT.  It requires the 
  128. latest version of COMCTL32.DLL, namely: version 4.70.

  142. CAN'T ENTER TEXT INTO tfmEDITOR - READ THIS
  143. By default the maximum document length for tfmEditor is set to 100 MB.  On some machines this setting will not work.  If when you try to key text into tfmEditor nothing happens then choose Options/Max Doc Size - 1MB from the menu.  The problem should go away.  The only difference is you won't be able to created documents larger than 1 meg.
